Strategic Communications Manager- Met Office
£365/day

This Communications Manager role will support the Services Directorate in implementing its Strategic Plan and
wider directorate initiatives through the delivery of communications and engagement activity to a diverse group of
staff in terms of both location and working patterns, that help staff feel informed, motivated and cohesive. The
person in this post will be able to gain a depth of understanding into the inner workings of the Services Directorate,
which is at the heart of what the Met Office delivers in its role as a world leading National Met Service.
The Services Directorate is about to go through a considerable amount of change under a new Services Director
who recently joined the organisation. A new strategic plan is about to be launched, alongside a new operating
model including introducing new capabilities to improve delivery of our Services to citizens, government and
industry. It's an exciting time to join to ensure communications are at the centre of everything Services do,
particularly important as it is the largest directorate in the Met Office and dispersed across the UK and
internationally (7 overseas locations). The new Services Director is passionate about good internal communications
and is looking to ensure we maximise opportunities to reach all staff and be engaging and innovative while doing
this.
While this post will be part of the Communications and Engagement team it will be embedded within the Services
Directorate working closely with the senior leadership team and especially across change management. While this
role will be responsible for the development and delivery of strategic communications within the Services
Directorate it must do so in line with wider corporate communications activities so must also work closely with the
Corporate and Internal Comms Team.
This is an interesting and varied role, taking a strategic view in often new or complex communications planning,
delivery and monitoring activities. It involves managing a broad range of relationships, to ensure that current and
future engagement activities are in alignment with the overarching Met Office Engagement Strategy, directorate
plans and corporate comms initiatives.
This post is initially for 6 months, with the possibility of an extension.

A relevant qualification in communications (or a related subject) and /or
a depth of experience in strategic communications planning and delivery across a range of
channels within a complex organisation with a distributed workforce.
Demonstrable ability to balance multiple complex priorities in a fastpaced environment, whilst staying focussed on outcomes and the management of resources/
agencies
Experience of gathering and using insight, excellent strategic thinking,
problem solving and judgement skills, to deliver well defined and considered recommendations
An effective networker with an ability to establish mutuality beneficial
long-term internal and external working relationships and ability to play an active role in cross
team forums.
Ability to work with, and act as an advisor to, people from a range of
work-related disciplines and at different levels of the organisation.
Excellent written and verbal skills will the ability to craft, compelling and
consistent messages for a range of stakeholders across a number of channels.
A broad experience and understanding of internal and corporate
communications and change communications
