Akton Resourcing are working with the Local Authorities to fill a contract position for a School Appeals Clerk. This role is initially on a contract basis working 37 hours per week.

Currently appeals are being arranged to run through the summer from May. Panel members are generally available for half a day at a time for remote hearings, so where there are multiple appeals for the same school these are likely to run over 2 or more consecutive part days.

The role includes all aspects of the clerk's role, e.g. advising all parties, ensuring that hearings are run in accordance with legal requirements, making appropriate records of the hearings and decision making and communicating the outcome to appellants. In conjunction with the Council, to respond to complaints about complaints made to the Local Government Ombudsman or Education and Skills Funding Agency.

Our ideal candidate would also be able to support preparation of the appeals paperwork (checking that all relevant documents are present and addressing any immediate issues with these) and/or deal with any queries arising from their preparation.

Skills and knowledge required:

Up to date knowledge of relevant legislation including the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 and the associated School Admissions and Appeals and Exclusion Codes;

Recent experience of clerking school admission appeals and up to date training and knowledge in the clerk role;

Ability to conduct appeals using remote technology (the Council uses Zoom and can support the running of the meeting)

Ability to advise on legal and quasi-judicial issues and deal empathetically with all involved in the appeals/exclusions process.
