Job Purpose:

To be responsible for the effective delivery of the Council’s focus on preventing homelessness for single people and childless couples who approach the Council in housing need. This will involve assisting single homeless clients and childless couples to avoid the experience of temporary accommodation by engaging with all necessary parties including landlords and other excluders to stop the loss of their current accommodation followed by a planned move to the Private Rented Sector where appropriate. When this is not possible, or appropriate, presenting a range of housing options to resolve their housing needs; supporting people to sustain their tenancies; working closely with the Prevention And Sustainment Solutions (PASS) scheme; making offers of affordable alternative accommodation; providing employment support, Housing Benefit liaison and case management. The postholder will have the ability to deal with a range of cases, including complex cases which may be subject to judicial review and ombudsman enquiries. The postholder will have a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, policy and procedures on homelessness and to provide innovative advice and solutions when dealing with complex and difficult cases.

The postholder will seek to empower single people and childless couples to find their own solution to their housing crises, and particularly:
  • Engaging individuals in the borough experiencing a housing crisis and managing their expectations in relation to the private rented property market in order to make the decision for themselves.
  • Linking those individuals with, and advocating for, the right assistance in existing services to address their holistic needs.
  • To avoid a placement in Temporary Accommodation for single people and childless couples receiving timely assistance in relation to their housing crisis.
